Changing the oil in your car is an essential part of routine maintenance that helps ensure the longevity and smooth performance of your vehicle’s engine. Start by gathering all the necessary tools and supplies. You will need a wrench or socket set, an oil filter wrench, an oil pan or container, a funnel, a new oil filter, and the appropriate amount and type of motor oil for your vehicle, as specified in your owner’s manual. You may also want to use a pair of gloves and safety goggles to protect yourself from any potential spills or splatters.
Park your car on a level surface and turn off the engine. Allow the engine to cool down for a few minutes to prevent burns from hot oil. Locate the oil drain plug and oil filter, typically found under the engine. You may need to raise the car using jack stands or ramps to access these components comfortably. Place the oil pan beneath the drain plug to catch the old oil, and have your tools ready.Using the wrench or socket set, carefully loosen the oil drain plug in a counterclockwise direction. Be cautious as the oil may be hot. Once it’s loose, use your hand to unscrew it completely and let the old oil drain into the pan. While the oil is draining, inspect the old oil filter and replace it with the new one. Use the oil filter wrench to remove the old filter if necessary. Wipe the filter mounting surface clean, apply a small amount of new oil to the rubber gasket on the new filter, and then screw it on hand-tight.
After allowing all the old oil to drain out, reinstall the oil drain plug securely. Use a funnel to pour the recommended amount and type of new oil into the engine through the oil filler cap on the top of the engine. Refer to your owner’s manual for the correct oil specification and quantity. Once you’ve added the new oil, replace the oil filler cap and start the engine for a few minutes to circulate the oil. Check the oil level using the dipstick and add more if needed. Finally, dispose of the old oil properly at a recycling center or an auto parts store that accepts used oil.
Changing your car’s oil is a straightforward but crucial maintenance task. Regularly changing the oil and oil filter helps keep your engine running smoothly and can extend its lifespan, ensuring you enjoy trouble-free driving for years to come.
